Tastes like Canadian Bacon

Sorry it's taken so long for an update. We arrived a few days ago and it has been such a whirlwind experience. The town is not quite as nice as I pictured it but I think I like it. We are living on the 10th floor of a mid-rise condo. I'm not in love with high-rise living as this is the second time we have done it and the first time with a kid. It just escalates the hassle but it's a nice apartment and it has air conditioning and a washer/dryer. I'll post pics later.

We had our first driving experience today. We have been assigned a car which is also a nice plus that we didn't think we would have but we didn't bring a car seat and to buy one here costs about two or three times the price of a car seat in the states. Driving here is not as bad as some places and it actually isn't much worse than Dallas at rush hour or downtwon Chicago. The main difference is all the motorcycles which do not obey any kind of driving rules and they expect you to yield to them. However, I have definitely seen worse drivers in OK. I'll post pics later.

Amazingly we have been here three days and have yet to eat any Thai food. There are tons of American food restaurants that our new friends have been taking us to. We even went shopping at a store with striking similarities to Wal-Mart. It even had the little smiley face roll-back stickers. No kidding!! Jeff and I won't be eating much American food or shopping at those Western-type stores very often because they are very pricey. I had to buy a new 220-volt hair dryer and it cost $15. It wasn't even a fancy salon-type one. I'll post pics later.

One of our new friends stocked our kitchen with a few groceries such as lunch meat, pb and j, milk, etc. It was nice of them to be so thoughtful. They even made banana bread for us!! I won't post pics because it's almost gone. :)

By the way, the ham tastes like canadian bacon.

Wow, sounds like you had quite a time. It's great that you already have friends there. I have been watching closely for another posting, can't wait to see the pictures.

In a couple of weeks you all will be old pros at the driving there and when you come back home you'll think people here are really slow!!

Love you,

Tammy

Thanks for sending an update... you knew we were anxious. Tenth floor? hmmmm.... I hope they have elevators over there!!! do you have a washer/dryer up there? If so, that will surely help. Well, sounds like you are easing into this new experience, with a mix of some Western stuff. I am so glad you had some friends to welcome you and who you can rely on for suggestions/ where to go, etc.

We'll keep reading and raising you up, so please post!

So glad to hear you made it safe and sound. I can't even imagine how overwhelmed you must be with all of your new surroundings, but it is also very exciting! I'm glad you have some things that are familiar -- especially the food -- to make it an easier transition. Looking forward to future posts!

Too bad about the car seat. Do they have car seat laws like we do here? If you can wait until next summer, we'll bring one with us.
Glad you are there and all is starting off well. I'm looking forward to hearing about your jobs and how you think you'll fit in there.

Heather and Jeff,
So glad to hear you are settling in and all is going well. That stinks about the cost of a car seat!
That is so nice that your new friends made you feel welcome with groceries and bannana bread (yummy).
Have fun driving! :)
Looking forward to reading more.

What is your daily routine now? Are you settled into one? How long did it take you get over jetlag? Has Chloe adjusted yet? Heather? Jeff? I googled common translation mistakes between english and thai. Some are fairly humorous. I tittered quite profusely for a moment.

Your Mother would like to schedule web cam time on Sunday evening (for us) which would be Saturday morning for ya'll right? What would be the best method for web cam and phone conversations. Call at certain times, have my people email your people?

Just a few questions to maybe address in your next posting.
